Keratin Treatments, Good or Bad?
The Keratin Hair Treatment has been praised for the results or criticized as being harmful to your hair. It seems to work for some people and it is a disaster for others. Many questions need to be answered. Is it the treatment or the hairstylist? Is it right for you? What causes problems?
When you hear a movie star say that she had to cut her hair because of a keratin treatment called the Brazilian Blowout, you think that it should be banned. However, hairstylist, Oscar Blandi says, “ I think the treatment on its own is generally effective, but you have to make sure the condition of the hair is right for it.’
We interviewed another expert Keratin hairstylist, Tiera Jones from Orange County, California. She said, “The most important decision after you decide to try the Keratin Treatment is to use an experienced stylist. Don’t trust your hair to just anyone. You should first go into the treatment with reasonable expectations. The Brazilian Blowout is a strong enough product to significantly straighten a curl pattern, along with frizz reduction. However, this is because of a combination of elements that produce a formaldehyde-like substance that can cause such a reaction and structural change within the hair shaft. The Keratin Treatment, on the other hand has much fewer chemicals. This is safer for the client and the stylist, however it may only produce frizz reduction and temporary healing of the hair strand as the Brazilian Blowout, but without any straightening properties. The reason the correct stylist is important is because over-processed hair requires a shift in the application and heat treatment process.”
Tiera also said, “There are also steps to be taken to keep your hair healthy and looking beautiful for as long as possible after the treatment.”
What are the main causes for the problems that some people have with the Keratin Treatment.
It is also important to remember the amount and temperature of the heat applied to the hair is very important. If you heat keratin to around 215-235°C ( 419-455F) the alpha helix starts to melt. This is a a physical change and it is irreversible, your hair will retain the shape of the melted keratin at a molecular level.
If the stylist used too high a heat or applies the heat too often to the hair during the treatment, Your hair can be burned and damaged.
Another problem can be caused by applying the same amount of heat necessary in a normal treatment to previously compromised hair.
In addition, there are different products used and types of treatment that are all considered Keratin treatments.
When you consider all the possible problems that can occur, you can see why an experienced professional stylist is so important.
Because the Keratin treatment has caused many people problems, you should not make your decision to try the treatment without careful consideration. Compare it to plastic surgery. Would you wake up one morning and decide to have some type of plastic surgery or would you consider the pluses and minuses. Of course, you would do some research.
You also wouldn’t look for someone on Craigslist who is offering 50% off on any plastic surgery done in the next week. You would find a professional and check their experience and references.
You would want someone who would have the knowledge to know if the treatment would help you or if you would have problems.
Having a Keratin treatment is an important decision. Be sure to go to an expert Keratin trained hairstylist before deciding to do the treatment.
